Brooke Gassiot creates paintings, drawings, and installations focused on her experiences with pregnancy, birth, motherhood, and being a woman. Her work explores the physical, emotional, and cyclical aspects of these experiences, often including images of flowers. Intimacy is central to her art, highlighting the mixture of pain and beauty in her relationship with her body. She addresses these experiences by reflecting on her changing body and the various roles she takes on. Gassiot shows surgery scars, flowers collapsing under their weight, and the impact of mothering on her body. The theme of "bathers" appears, connecting her work to Modernist images of bathing women and the Renaissance Madonna. She often incorporates imagined coming-of-age rituals and scenes of mothering. Each piece captures not just how it looks to be a woman, but how it feels to live in her skin.
