About
BIO
Brooke Gassiot is an interdisciplinary artist based on Vashon Island, Washington. Working across figurative painting, cyanotype, and sculptural video installation, her practice explores transitional states in women’s lives, with a focus on embodiment, ritual, and the tension of becoming. Raised in a creatively driven household, with a textile artist mother and a custom homebuilder father, Gassiot developed an early sensitivity to material and form. She received her BFA with Distinguished Honors from The University of Texas at Austin and studied in Tuscany, Italy on full scholarship. Her work has been exhibited at Lawndale Art Center, The Contemporary Austin, and Blue Star Contemporary, and is held in private and institutional collections, including the Kinsey Institute. She is the founder of ICOSA Gallery in Austin and has participated in residencies at Vermont Studio Center and Joya: AiR in Spain.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am an artist who explores the impact of childbirth, aging and disease on the female body through video installations and paintings. My artwork encourages the viewer to reflect on and recognize the many facets of living in a woman's skin. From menstruation to hysterectomy, I use my art to acknowledge the often unseen realities of women's experiences.
View my presentation through Women & Their Work’s online series ‘Fresh from the Studio’ in 2021.
We spoke about our exhibition ‘Vessel’ at ICOSA Gallery in Austin, Texas in 2021, in collaboration with fellow artist Alyssa Taylor Wendt.
